Mini Lop Qualities

Temperament

When we added a second breed to our rabbitry, we knew we wanted one that would have a fun, playful temperament. With their smaller size and adorable lop ears, you can't help but want to cuddle these little ones.

Show

We've raised rabbits for several years now and one thing we've learned is that it's worth investing more up front in high quality rabbits than it is to work for generations to refine lesser quality ones. We bought some really nice breeding stock in hopes to be able to provide wonderful breeding stock to other lop breeders in our area.

Meat

While they aren't a commercial meat breed, mini lops' compact bodies make them a good meat breeding rabbit for smaller spaces. Our primary purpose with our lops is to breed for show and pets, but we also want our cull rabbits to have a purpose as well.

About Mini Lops

The Mini Lop is one of the smaller breeds. In spite of its size, it is not a true dwarf rabbit, but is instead a miniature version of the French Lop. They're stocky and sturdy, with lop ears that have rounded, furred tips. Their fur is rollback, so instead of remaining on end like our Silver Foxes, the Mini Lop fur gradually returns to a flat position when it is brushed backwards.

According to records, the Mini Lop’s story began in Germany in the 1950s with two different breeders. In his book, “Domestic Rabbits & Their Histories,” Bob Whitman mentions several breeds being used in the development, including Chinchilla, French Lop, English Lop, New Zealand, Polish, and Dwarf Lop. This breed, originally known as Klein Widder, was recognized by the German Standard in 1973. These rabbits were brought into the United States in the 1970's and the re-named Mini Lop gained ARBA recognition in 1980. It’s now one of the most popular breeds in the United States.
